Who’s ARchie?
ARchie is an Augmented Reality App that shows the availability of the conference rooms and shared offices in the IT company Inno-Tec.
By scanning a “VuMark” sticker on the outside a calendar with vacant time and bookings of the respecting room is displayed.
Why has it been developed?
Before, the only way to check the availability status was to open the respective calendar in Outlook – mostly on your Laptop.
A not so easy procedure when standing in the hallway in front of the room while holding a coffee.
ARchie makes this a lot easier by just holding your phone in front of a sticker.
App Icon
The goal was to design an app icon that symbolize a room in combination with augmented reality.
It was also necessary to create a connection to the company and brand of Inno-Tec.
The final icon took all this requirements in mind and was created in three design steps:
- The first step combined a 3 dimensional room with an abstracted door
- In the second step I morphed the official AR glyph into the outlines of the room and smoothed the edges
- The branding was the last step of the design process where I added the corporate color gradient of the company as background
App Name
The name of the app needed to be something short that works fine in german as well as in english, is easy to remember, not used by something else and represents the augmented reality aspect.
Many suitable names were created, but the personal character as it is a co-worker itself made “ARchie – Augmented Reality Check” the winner.
VuMark
VuMark is the next generation bar code.
It allows the freedom for a customized and brand-conscious design while simultaneously encoding data and acting as an AR target.
The VuMark design was created in Adobe Illustrator using the VuMark Designer tool.
When designing VuMarks five primary components contribute to their uniqueness, detectability, and data encoding capabilities.
Control Elements
To ensure a consistent style an harmonic look and feel all UI Elements as icons, buttons and controls are individually designed:
